Understanding the Beauty of a Japanese Sword
A Guide to the Hamon, Jihada, Nie, Nioi, and Hadori
One of the questions I am asked most often by people seeing an authentic Japanese sword for the first time is:
"What am I supposed to be looking at?"
Most people naturally focus on the white line running along the edge—the area commonly referred to as the hamon. Yet the beauty of a Japanese sword extends far beyond that single feature.
Its beauty lies in the character of the steel itself, the crystalline structures created during yaki-ire (differential hardening), and the craftsmanship of the polisher who reveals what already exists within the blade.
Before reading further, take a moment to look at the photograph below.
It highlights some of the most important features experienced collectors examine when appreciating a Japanese sword.
Jihada

Looking across the surface of the blade, you will notice a delicate grain pattern resembling wood.
This is known as jihada.
An authentic Japanese sword is not simply stamped, machined, or cut from a sheet of steel.
Instead, tamahagane is repeatedly folded, forge-welded, and refined. Layer upon layer of steel is built up, leaving behind the grain patterns that record the forging process itself.
Repeated forging helps distribute carbon more evenly throughout the steel while reducing unwanted impurities. At the same time, an accomplished swordsmith may intentionally preserve subtle variations in density or even take advantage of certain impurities when they contribute to the desired characteristics of the blade.
Jihada appears in many forms, including itame, mokume, and masame. In most swords these grain patterns are mixed together, and their balance varies from school to school and from smith to smith.
Jihada is not decoration.
It is the visible history of how the blade was forged.
Hadori

One of the most common misconceptions among beginners concerns the white line visible along the edge.
Many people assume this white band is the hamon itself.
It is not.
It is called hadori, a traditional finishing technique performed during the final stages of polishing.
The purpose of hadori is not to create the hamon.
Its purpose is to make the hardened edge forged by the swordsmith easier to appreciate.
A skilled polisher does not create something new.
Instead, the polisher reveals the blade's true character.
In many cases, hadori also expresses the swordsmith's original intent when creating the hamon, bringing forward the overall theme and atmosphere of the blade.
For this reason, Japanese sword polishing is regarded not simply as craftsmanship, but as an art in its own right.
Hamon and Nioiguchi
The hamon is the visible hardened pattern created during yaki-ire.
Among all of its features, the nioiguchi is one of the most important.
The nioiguchi is the boundary where the hardened edge meets the body of the blade. Consequently, when collectors discuss the quality of a hamon, they are often referring primarily to the nioiguchi.
Japanese sword enthusiasts frequently describe a blade by saying that its nioiguchi is:

tight
-
full and rounded
-
bright
-
brilliant
These expressions describe the quality of the hardening itself and are among the most important criteria when evaluating a blade.
Every swordsmith produces a different nioiguchi. Its brightness, tightness, degree of looseness, and the way it changes from the machi to the kissaki all reflect the individual smith's skill.
Generally speaking, a blade whose nioiguchi remains continuous and consistently well controlled from the base of the blade to the tip is regarded as evidence of exceptional craftsmanship.
Viewed from a distance, the nioiguchi appears as a soft mist-like band.
As you look closer, however, countless tiny and larger particles begin to emerge within it.
These are nioi and nie.
Nioi
Most of the mist-like band that forms the nioiguchi consists of nioi.
Nioi is composed of extremely fine martensite crystals.
The individual crystals are too small to be distinguished with the naked eye, giving the appearance of a soft mist or haze.
The elegant nioi-based hamon of the Bizen tradition is especially admired, while blades of the Soshu and Mino traditions often display much stronger nie.
Neither is inherently superior.
They simply represent different aesthetic ideals developed by different traditions.
In general, gentler hardening conditions tend to produce hamon dominated by nioi.
Nie and Jinie

Within the nioiguchi you will also notice tiny sparkling particles.
These are called nie.
Nie consists of relatively large martensite crystals formed during yaki-ire. When they catch the light, they sparkle like tiny stars.
The only difference between nie and nioi is the size of the individual crystals. If they are large enough to be distinguished individually with the naked eye, they are called nie.
In general, stronger hardening conditions tend to produce more pronounced nie.
Depending on the size of the crystals, collectors distinguish between ko-nie, nie, and ara-nie. The blade shown here displays ara-nie.
When the same crystalline activity appears within the jihada rather than the hardened edge, it is known as jinie.
Jinie gives depth, richness, and vitality to the surface of the steel.
Many of Japan's finest blades exhibit beautiful jinie, causing the jihada itself to glow as the sword is moved through the light.
These subtle activities are among the first things that experienced collectors learn to recognize.
Controlling the Jitetsu, Jihada, and Nioiguchi
The structure, width, and brightness of the nioiguchi are largely determined during yaki-ire.
A swordsmith must heat a blade—sometimes exceeding one meter in length and varying considerably in thickness—to an even temperature before quenching it, producing a controlled hardened edge from the machi to the kissaki.
Depending on the period and the intended purpose of the sword, some smiths deliberately varied the hardening conditions. The base of the blade might be hardened more gently, while the monouchi near the tip received a stronger hardening treatment to improve cutting performance, creating intentional differences in hardness along the blade.
All of these techniques contribute to the remarkable qualities of the Japanese sword: exceptional cutting ability, resistance to breaking, resilience against bending, and extraordinary artistic beauty.
Bringing these seemingly contradictory qualities together in a single blade is one of the reasons why the Japanese sword is regarded as one of humanity's greatest achievements in bladesmithing.
Light Reveals the True Nature of a Japanese Sword

The photographs in this article capture only a single moment.
Hold an authentic Japanese sword in your hands and slowly change its angle beneath the light.
The jihada begins to emerge.
The nie starts to sparkle.
The nioi drifts into view like mist.
The nioiguchi becomes bright and vivid.
Even the character of the hamon changes from one moment to the next.
For this reason, experienced collectors never judge a blade from a single photograph alone.
A Japanese sword is not an artwork that exists only in a still image.
It is an artwork completed by light.
Its appearance changes according to the viewer, the angle of the light, the time of day, and the observer's knowledge and experience. Even the appreciation of nie, nioi, ko-nie, and ara-nie ultimately depends upon a trained eye and an individual's sensitivity to what the blade reveals.
